International nurses

University Hospitals Plymouth have been recruiting internationally for many years, with our most recent recruitment drive beginning in September 2019 and still ongoing. Since then, we have welcomed 477 International Nurses to the Trust from numerous countries such as India, Philippines, Nigeria and more. Our International Nurses work within different areas of the Trust, such as Cardiac, Oncology or many other Medical and Surgical specialities. International nurses are a key part of our workforce and bring many new ideas and ways of working which offer great benefit to our patients and teams

We recognise that the transition to the UK and NHS is not always an easy one, so providing support at every step along the way is paramount to us: be this OSCE or making a British cup of tea! Our Orientation package has been developed to help our International Nurses adapt to living in Britain, starting with meeting them at the airport, all the way through to opening a bank account and showing Plymouth’s famous landmarks and beautiful city. After Orientation, our International Nurses attend our internal OSCE Training Programme, covering APIE (Academic and Professional International Evaluations) and all skills stations in line with NMC standards; and we’re pleased to say our OSCE Training Programme has a 100% pass rate. Post OSCE our nurses are supported through an adapted Preceptorship, tailored to meet their exact needs, ready to work as UK Registered Nurses. They then receive continual support from the International Recruitment Team and Ward Manager to embed and welcome them into the organisation.

We’re always ready to support more international nurses, so please contact us at plh-tr.internationalnurserec@nhs.net for information or with any questions.
