Open heart 20,000th milestone

The South West Cardiothoracic Centre (SWCTC) has successfully completed 20,000 open heart operations since it opened in 1997.

In the course of reaching this landmark, the cardiac surgical teams have performed an average of more than 1,000 open heart operations per year with high quality clinical outcomes and a survival rate above the national average.

Plymouth hosts Japanese visitors

Four Japanese healthcare representatives have been given a tour of Derriford Hospital following an invitation from one of our staff.

The visit was prompted after an event last year organised by the Japanese STD Society with support from Tokyo University. At the conference, in Japan, Nursing Unit Manager of Sexual Health in Plymouth (SHiP) at Derriford Hospital, Colin Roberts, presented two papers and a workshop on sexual health in the UK, focusing on clinical competence and the role of the nurse in advanced sexual health practice.

Resounding South West patient support for health research

Taking part in health research comes highly recommended by patients in the South West who felt valued and well looked after as study participants.  The findings of the second annual Patient Experience Questionnaire (PEQ) survey carried out by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network: South West Peninsula found that patients taking part in studies viewed their experience very positively.

Blood salvage technique is big success at Derriford

A blood conservation project for people undergoing operations is being rolled out across Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust because of benefits to patients as well as cost savings. The cell salvage project has been running since 2008 with proven health benefits to patients and cost benefits for our Trust. It involves collecting and reusing blood that a patient loses during a procedure.
