Sarah raises money to thank hospital staff for saving her Dad

In September 2021, Sarah Bickell’s Dad was admitted to hospital after a week of suffering with COVID-19. Despite having been vaccinated, three days later he was moved into intensive care (ICU) at University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP).

Sarah explains, “The nurses, doctors, physios and staff at UHP became Dad’s family. They have seen him through the darkest moments whilst caring for him. They ran constant tests, treated him, monitored him 24/7 and truthfully, kept him alive until he could fight for his life himself. The physios taught him how to walk again.”

Despite his 135-day hospital stay, his journey is far from over - he came home to lead a very different life. With such scarred lungs, he now relies on oxygen just to move around.

However, instead of focusing on the challenges he faces daily, he focuses on life and on still being here to make special memories with his family. So much so, he has inspired his daughter, Sarah, to run the Plymouth half marathon in June.

Sarah adds, “There are not enough words to describe how incredible the staff are both in the ICU at UHP and at Mount Gould. So instead of trying to find the words, Dad would like to raise money for Penrose ICU at UHP. They are real life heroes… just like my Dad”. Sarah will be running the Plymouth half marathon on Sunday 19 June in the hope she can raise as much awareness and money as possible, for the incredible teams that saved her Dad’s life.
