Former ‘students’ of the Plymouth Diabetes Centre returned to the unit recently to show their gratitude and support of the Centres’ group education sessions, which they have previously attended.
Presenting a cheque for £112.00, Jeff Sutcliffe, a former Blue Circle employee said: “At our recent reunion to celebrate 50 years of cement production in Plymouth we chose to support the Plymouth Diabetes Centre. A few retired members of the company have attended diabetes group education and were very grateful and felt that supporting this work was most important.”
Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Centre, Lizzie Moore, Lead Nurse and Diabetes Service Co-ordinator said: “Donations to the centre are very valuable as they allow us to provide additional support to our patients. This generous donation will be used towards the continuing education for patients of the Diabetes Centre.”
There are 2.9million people with diabetes in the UK, which equates to 4.45% of population. It is thought that there are approximately 1 million undiagnosed cases and 1,000 new patients present in Plymouth every year.
