Numbers treated in primary care in 2007/8
Plymouth Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT) is the lead NHS organisation in Plymouth responsible for improving the health and well-being of the local population.  The PCT provides and purchases, or commissions, health services for more than 250,000 people who live in the City of Plymouth.  Primary care is often the first point of contact between the public and the NHS; about 90 percent of all NHS contact happens in the community. Plymouth PCT provides both community health services and mental health services.

The PCT’s central responsibility is to commission healthcare services on behalf of local people.  To do this it carries out detailed work to understand local health need and make sure services are in place to meet current and future requirements.  By investing funds wisely, the PCT aims to secure the maximum improvement in health and well-being outcomes from the resources it has.

Last year Plymouth PCT spent around £1,320 for every patient registered with a GP in Plymouth.  This money funded:

·Over 400,000 community contacts with professionals such as district nurses and health visitors.
· Around 59,000 inpatient bed days from services provided by the PCT.
· More than 25,000 unplanned or emergency admissions to hospital.
· Approximately 30,000 planned hospital admissions.

It also included the skilled services provided by:
· More than 2,600 PCT staff.
· 46 GP surgeries, with more than 190 GPs offering a full range of services.
· 26 dental practices which provided more than 350,000 units of dental activity.
· 50 pharmacies which dispensed more than 3.5million NHS prescriptions for Plymouth residents.
