Dr Welch trained at King’s College Hospital in London. Postgraduate training was in London, Devon and Liverpool. He specialised in Fetal Medicine and Fetal (intrauterine) Therapy whilst working in some of the leading Fetal Centres in the UK at Queen Charlotte’s, Hammersmith Liverpool Women’s and Birmingham Women’s Hospitals. He was consultant on Wirral for 12 years before moving to Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust in 2005, where he is the lead for Obstetric Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine.
He was President of the international Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society in 1999 and remains on the board. He is RCOG Tutor at Derriford Hospital and leads specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Derriford.
