Using the latest techniques and advanced technology the Centre offers the full range of adult cardiac surgery other than transplantation.
In 2007-2008 over 1,000 open heart operations were performed with a projected total of 1,200 to be performed in 2008-2009. The main operations performed are:
- Coronary artery bypass Grafting. Including: "Off-pump" surgery
- Total arterial revascularisation (using arteries instead of veins)
- Endoscopic vein harvesting "(keyhole" surgery in the leg)
- Aortic Valve replacemant
- Mitral valve replacement
- Mitral valve repair
- Percutaneous aortic valve
- Surgery for heart failure including ventricular remodelling
- Surgery on the aorta
- Surgery to ablate atrial fibrillation
The surgeons work closely with a team of expert cardiologists.
Since the centre opened the results have been consistently excellent and are amongst the best in the country. The infection rates with MRSA and other bacteria are very low and we have a very close working relationship with the hospital infection control team who continuously monitor the wards.
The centre is considered to be one of the leading experts in bypass, valve and aortic surgery. We are currently the UK teaching centre for both atrial fibrillation ablation (ultrasound) and endoscopic vein harvesting.
The Centre mainly operates on people from Devon and Cornwall and the surrounding areas but welcomes enquiries from anyone further afield.
