Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
The cardiothoracic intensive care unit moved to a new, state of the art facility in June 2007. Situated on level 6 of the Terence Lewis Building, the unit provides a 22-bed critical care facility containing both Intensive Care and High Dependency beds. The unit is purpose built and ergonomically designed. It is open plan and has been designed to maximise natural light throughout the facility. Each bed has the latest monitoring technology. The entire unit is paper free, offering a seamless patient transition - both monitoring and note taking, through the entire patient journey, from admission, via surgery, intensive care and to the ward.
The eight cardiothoracic anaesthetists offer a consultant led and delivered service, supported by dedicated nursing staff, physiotherapists, radiologists, occupational and speech therapists and dieticians.
The unit has spacious relatives and visitors facilities.
Medical students from the Peninsula Medical School are frequently attached to the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit.
