Calling Before You Come
Staff at the Royal Eye Infirmary, Plymouth would like to remind members of the public needing emergency eye care to call the accident and emergency (A&E) department before attending.
The telephone assessment system, which replaced the ‘walk-in’ system in 2000, is staffed by senior qualified Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioners who assess the patient, give advice and guidance and offer an appropriate appointment time either immediately, later the same day, within the week or directed to their GP, Optician or Pharmacist.
Sister Vicky Brotherton from the REI Accident and Emergency department said: “Anyone who needs help or advice with an emergency eye problem should telephone the department on 01752 439330 or 439331 and they will be advised what to do. All patients will be prioritised and seen according to the seriousness of their problem. Obviously patients with extremely serious conditions will still be seen immediately.
