We are proud to say that Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust has:

  • Above average survival rates. For the period April 2009 to March 2010, our Hospital Standardised Mortality Rate was 73.7, almost 26% lower (better) than expected.

  • Falling MRSA rates. Thanks to the hard work of our staff, the Trust has reduced rates of MRSA bacteraemias from 98 cases in 2003/4 to 15 cases in 2009/10.

  • One of the lowest rates of Clostridium difficile of any large teaching hospital in the country and this has continued to fall. In 2009/10 there were 77 cases of Clostridium difficile infections identifed, a reduction of more than 50% from the previous year.

  • Proved ourselves as a growing specialist centres. Plymouth has been offering more and more specialist services so patients in the south west who need more complex treatment can enjoy good clinical outcomes without having to travel out of the peninsula, wherever possible. We are already a specialist centre for neurosurgery, cardiac and renal surgery, upper GI cancer surgery and neonatal intensive care.

  • Enabled more patietns to benefit from kidney transplants than ever before. In 2009 surgeons performed 75 transplants at the South West Transplant Centre, based at Derriford Hospital.

  • Been named as an 'Exemplar Centre' for venous thromboembolism prevention by the Department of Health, making the Trust the first Exemplar Centre in the peninsula and one of only 14 in England.

  • A comprehensive range of specialities on one site at Derriford Hospital with some of the best imaging facilities in Europe, including three MRI scanners and four CT scanners.
