Welcome to Research and Development in Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust

The Trust Board recognises that research is integral to the Trust’s ability to achieve its overall long-term aims and it has put in place an ambitious Research & Development Strategic Plan 2009-2014 with the following mission:

‘To support the Trust’s strategic care programmes by developing a research rich culture and environment which is based on research strengths, targeted investment and collaborative research.’

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust has a well established reputation for high quality research and development and a strong record of participation in commercial and non-commercial clinical trials.  Research takes place within all of our clinical directorates, inspired by the successes of our internationally recognised researchers in areas such as neurosciences and diabetes.

Our expertise and standing has led to Trust staff to being awarded major research grants by the National Institute for Health Research including:

o The South West Peninsula Clinical Research Collaboration (PenCLAHRC) a partnership of local NHS trusts and the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth committed to increasing excellent clinical research in the south-west was awarded £10 million to establish a five-year pilot CLAHRC in the region. This funding will be matched by a further £10 million from a number of sources.

o A £2m programme grant awarded for research into clinical trial methods for neurodegenerative diseases.

We hope you will find our Research webpages helpful.  If you would like more information on any aspect of our research and development activities please get in touch with us via our contacts page.
