Splash'ED' appeal refocuses fundraising efforts

alt In November we launched the fundraising appeal ‘SplashED’, with the aim of creating a beautiful underwater-themed extension to the children’s Emergency Department. Since then we have been given the fantastic news that the Trust has been awarded £30million to build a brand new Urgent and Emergency Care Hub. Given this great news, we have decided to make a change to the original appeal.

“Following the recent announcement that Plymouth has been awarded £30 million to build a new Urgent and Emergency Care Hub, Plymouth Hospitals Charity and the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund are proposing any money raised for the SplashED appeal will go towards items which are transferrable to the new building”, said Plymouth Hospitals Charity Development Manager, Corinne Bailey.

“The charities are refocusing the decorating ideas in the original plan to purchase items that can be moved to the new Paediatric Emergency Department once it has been completed. All those who have donated so far have been contacted to be made aware of the change to the appeal.”

Lead Nurse for Paediatrics, Charlotte Durrant, said: “Attendances to our paediatric emergency department have increased by 65% since 2016/17. To minimise stress for our young patients, we are looking to purchase distraction toys and visual aids which are well researched into providing children with support during stressful events.”

The SplashED appeal would like to purchase a ‘Magic Carpet’ which works by projecting interactive games onto a flat surface. Hundreds of different visual stimulus can be programmed into the projector, providing a fun activity for children, whilst keeping the floor space clear.

For more information the charities can be contacted on 01752 430332 (Plymouth Hospitals Charity) or 01752 430129 (Children’s Happy Hospital Fund).
