Maternity Entrance Carpark Closure FAQs

Maternity Department Car Parking

The car park outside of the Derriford hospital Maternity Department will be closed as of Monday 22 August 2022.

Why is the Maternity car park closing?
The space is needed to build a brand new two storey building that will accommodate a ground floor Chemotherapy Day Case unit.
In a second phase, the Orthopaedics ward will move into this ground floor of this building, and Urology will be on the first floor. This is much needed space to deliver a safe and efficient service to all our patients and the community. The decision to use this space for a new building has been taken after considering all other options. We expect the construction to be finished in January 2023.

How long will it be closed for?
The car park will be permanently closed, and the space will be used to treat more patients that need it.

Where can I park?
Find out more about parking at Derriford

  • You can park at the multistorey car park or the pay and display area next to Costa Coffee.
  • If you have mobility issues and would like to use our mobility bus, the car park by Costa would be a better option as the bus will be able to get closer to you.
  • If you are coming for an appointment in the Lancaster Suite or to visit someone at the Ocean Suite, the main entrance on Level 6, by M&S, might be a more suitable entrance into the building for you.
  • If using the main entrance, car park A might be a better option. You can see a map of our carparks here.

Where do I go if I am in labour?
There is a drop - off area at the Maternity entrance for ambulances and emergencies. A patient in labour can be dropped off here. Please follow the signs indicating 'Maternity emergency' or talk to one of the staff members situated in the area to direct traffic.

I have difficulties walking. How can I make sure I park and have enough time to walk to my appointment?
People with mobility issues, whether they have a blue badge or not, are welcome to use our free mobility bus service. The bus circulates between carparks picking up patients and taking them to the most convenient entrance for them, including the Maternity entrance.

If you can’t see the bus when you park, you can phone the driver on 07827897431 and request a pickup. This service is available Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 17:00. Wheelchairs and prams (depending on size) can be stored on the back of the bus. Adults and children (accompanied by an adult) can use the service.
