UHP is shortlisted for the 2022 Sustainability Partnership Awards

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) has been shortlisted for a Sustainability Partnership Award in the category of staff engagement for its Choosing Greener campaign.

The Sustainability Partnership Awards showcase and recognise NHS Trusts and healthcare organisations who have strived to implement sustainable change, benchmarking their achievements and progress across the healthcare landscape to make the world a greener place. The awards this year will be taking place via Zoom on 6 December at midday, with one winner being announced for each category.

Launched in February 2022, the Choosing Greener campaign encourages UHP colleagues to register with a unique online platform and share their sustainable actions, in order to earn ‘green points’. Accrual of points allows staff to compete as teams and check performance compared to others, as well as having the opportunity to win monetary vouchers or a donation to Plymouth Hospitals Charity.

“We’ve had some great feedback for this programme so far, with colleagues telling us that it is not only beneficial in prompting greener thoughts, but also in encouraging changing behaviour,” explains Kirsty Wavish, Green Plan Programme Manager. “The online platform is unique in bringing all areas of sustainability and wellbeing together in one holistic programme, giving colleagues the tools they require to opt for more sustainable behaviours.”

The Choosing Greener platform currently asks Trust staff to report on activities such as recycling, switching off electricity, re-using cups and bottles, traveling by foot, bike or bus and going paper-free. It also helps to educate and increase understanding of sustainability, answering questions such as ‘what is carbon?’ and encourages Trust staff to share sustainability projects that are already happening at UHP.

“This project has shown a real potential for significant savings, particularly through behaviour changes towards energy use, but also through a reduction in waste, increasing sustainable travel and even improving health and wellbeing,” adds Kirsty.

“The next step for us is to continue to grow our Green Champions network at the Trust, in order to promote sustainable behaviours even further.”
