Teams from University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) are at the Royal Cornwall Show this year, showcasing our plans for the new Urgent and Emergency Care facility as well as exciting recruitment and research opportunities.

For the first time, UHP are combining forces with Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT), Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board to have an NHS marquee at the Royal Cornwall Show, being held in Wadebridge from Thursday 8 June to Saturday 10 June 2023. It is the biggest annual public event in Cornwall with an anticipated footfall of 120,000 people from across Cornwall, Devon and beyond over the three days.

Visitors to the showground are invited to come along to the NHS marquee (trade stand number 83) to learn more about both UHP and RCHT’s exciting plans as part of the Future Hospital Programme. There will be the opportunity to take part in an important survey, which will help inform the developments, as well as to watch fly-through videos of both the new Urgent and Emergency Care facility in Plymouth and the new Women and Children’s Hospital in Truro.

Future Hospital Programme Director at UHP, Stuart Windsor, said: “Modernising our estate and our emergency care and theatre provision is hugely important, not only to provide sufficient capacity for the growing population of Plymouth and the wider peninsula, but so we can deliver outstanding integrated care, to unlock better outcomes, to reduce inequalities and to improve lives across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.”

The new facility is just part of a number of upcoming building developments planned as part of the redevelopment of the Derriford Hospital site. You can find out more about these, including the new home for the Royal Eye Infirmary and new Discharge Assessment Unit at Mount Gould, at our Building for the Future stand at the show.

Recruitment teams from all organisations will also be present in the NHS marquee, with opportunities to hear more about the range of full and part-time careers available at both UHP and across the NHS in Cornwall right now, from clinical to admin roles, catering and apprenticeships.

Scarlett Stone, Resourcing Outreach and Events Lead at UHP, said: “We’re really excited to be at the Royal Cornwall Show over the next few days. Please come along and say hello to the team, see what current vacancies we have live and find out how you can take that first step into working within the NHS. We look forward to meeting you and will be happy to answer any questions you may have around working with us.”

UHP’s Research and Development team will also be at the show, with the opportunity to see both Mobile Research Unit (MRU) vans and also to experience what it is like to be involved in clinical research, by taking part in a mock research trial involving free chocolate.

Eden Wildman, Mobile Research Team Lead at UHP, said: “Our MRU’s now mean that participants no longer need to travel into the hospital to take part in vital research, and we are looking forward to showcasing them at the show.

“Our Research and Development team will also be around to discuss what it means to take part in research, share participant stories and signpost you to any trials which may be of interest. We hope you’ll pop along to take part in our chocolate trial and also help us to design the exterior of our newest MRU.”

What else is happening in the NHS marquee?

Free health checks available at this year's show include: blood pressure check; cholesterol levels, via a finger-prick blood test; Atrial Fibrillation check (listening to your heart); dementia awareness in 65 years and over; BMI calculation; and lifestyle questions. These checks will determine if your results are within normal ranges and the action that should be taken. You will also be given a QRisk2 score, which works out your percentage risk of having a cardiovascular disease over the 10 years and gives you your heart age.

A range of giant games will be on offer at this year's stand, including giant Jenga and Connect Four. There will also be a colouring competition, fancy dress opportunity and a bed-making competition with a prize for the best and fastest. So, get practising those hospital corners!

As a bit of fun for children, clinicians from Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust will be on site to put little one’s arms into plaster casts. Don’t worry, the team will cut them off before you head home!

There will also be a range of freebies to take away, from pens to sun cream!

How to find us

The NHS will be at stand number 83, just down from the main entrance on the right-hand side (see showground reference B1 on this map). You can also watch this video as to how to locate the marquee.
