Chestnut Urology Investigation Unit (CUIU)

As part of the ongoing site restructure, the Chestnut Unit has moved to the first floor of a brand new, purpose-built modular building in front of the maternity unit, near the multi-story car park. The new Chestnut Urology Investigation Unit opened to patients in December 2023. Urology is a surgical speciality, covering the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs.

CUIU Location

The new Chestnut Urology Investigation Unit is based on the first floor of the new modular building in front of the maternity unit, down the hill from the Bircham multi-storey car park.

  • Minor ops lab which will help to reduce the wait time for patients for certain procedures.
  • An ultrasound lab where we can request in house imaging and benefit from having a radiographer on site with us.
  • Increase consulting room space to increase the number of outpatient clinics reducing wait times by seeing an increased number of patients.

  • The environment is generally a beautiful space for staff and patient and will dramatically improve the wellbeing of staff and patients.

CUIU Team and key partners

The Urology team work closely with the Chestnut Appeal, a charity founded at Derriford Hospital in 1999. The new unit includes an office for the Chestnut Appeal Charity team, who continue to raise funds for the very latest equipment and comforts for patients which are beyond what is offered on the NHS.

CUIU Sustainability benefits

  • Fully electric heating and cooling solution
  • LED lighting throughout c/w Passive Infra-red control
  • Low power fans on Air Handling Units
  • Air source heat pumps throughout (this help to reduce fuel usage when heating the building)
  • U value of 0.18w/m2 for external walls (The U-value, thermal transmittance, used on this project is a significant enhancement to requirements under Building Regulations. It increases the thermal efficiency of the building by over 25% given that we effectively have almost 400mm of insulation in the external wall build up)
