Core Day 1 – What is Cancer?

• The anatomy & physiology of cancer
• How cancer is diagnosed, classified & staged
• How this information is used to plan treatment
• The emotional, social, psychological & spiritual implications of  a cancer diagnosis
• Supportive care available & how to access it

Core Day 2 - Cancer & Treatment Methods

• What are the surgical options and outcomes for cancer patients? The role of surgery in the management of cancer (specific surgeries would be discussed on site specific days)
• Introduction to chemotherapy – how does it work, when & why is it used. How does it affect the patient & the management of side effects
• Introduction to radiotherapy - how does it work, when & why is it used. How does it affect the patient & the management of side effects

Core Day 3 – Communication skills and supporting the distressed patient

This day is an opportunity to reflect upon our communication skills and style with the aim of building confidence is supporting those who have received difficult news

• Exploration of  the consequences of poor communication in healthcare
• Principles of good communication
• Listening skills & the importance of checking out information
• The patient experience of good & bad ways to give significant information
• Observation of a role play – interactive learning experience
• Sharing good practice & difficult communication episodes
• The importance of looking after yourself – getting support and recognising stressors within yourself
