Referral Guidance for Extracorpeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) at Derriford Hospital

Our on-site lithotripter was installed in 2020 and is the Storz SLX-F2 model.

We provide emergency lithotripsy for patients with renal stones (5mm - 15mm) or ureteric stones (5mm – 10mm). We also offer elective lithotripsy for renal stones (4mm – 15mm) and ureteric stones (4mm – 10mm).

Contraindications for lithotripsy:

  • Acute UTI or urosepsis
  • Poorly controlled hypertension
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Uncorrected bleeding disorders
  • Pregnancy
  • Obstruction distal to calculus
  • Renal ectopy or malformations
  • Complex intra-renal drainage
  • Gastrointestinal disorders

If you believe you have a patient who is suitable for lithotripsy, please fill in the referral form on the next page and email it to along with a CTKUB (and x-ray if stone not visible on scout). A urinalysis should be obtained and a sample sent if necessary. If a UTI is evident please ensure patient has course of antibiotics prior to referral and listing for ESWL.
