Mr P Ariyaratnam

Mr Ariyaratnam qualified from Southampton Medical School with a Bachelor of Medicine (Distinction in BM Primary) and Bachelor of Sciences (1st Class Honours) in 2007. During this time he won numerous undergraduate prizes including the Sutton Prize in Surgery. He completed his Foundation Training in Southampton General Hospital (2007-2009) before moving to the Yorkshire Deanery to undertake his Core Surgical Training (2009-2011).

Following this, he received his Research Doctorate (MD) at the University of York in 2014. His thesis was looking at the mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension from which he was awarded the European Young Investigator Awards at EACTS for 2 consecutive years (2012 & 2013).

He completed his Higher Specialist Training (gaining his CCT) in Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Yorkshire Deanery rotating through hospitals in Hull, Leeds and Sheffield (2015-2022). During this time, he practiced both General Cardiac Surgery and General Thoracic Surgery before specialising in advanced keyhole (VATS) surgery of the chest and endoscopic surgery of the airways (including electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy and laser/debulking surgery for tracheal tumours).    

Parallel to his operative training, he was also appointed as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Cardiothoracic Surgery (2016-2020) where his role was to supervise postgraduate research (including supervising a successful PhD) and provide teaching to undergraduate students. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications, available on PubMed. 

He was appointed as a Thoracic Surgery Consultant in Plymouth in 2022 and manages patients from across Devon and Cornwall. His sub-specialist interests include VATS surgery for both lung cancer and chest trauma as well as interventions for surgical diseases of the airway.
