Service Line Director for the Plastic Surgery Department
Mr Alex Armstrong is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon. He entered the Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in 2021 and was appointed as a Consultant at University Hospitals Plymouth where he offers limb reconstruction, skin cancer treatment and a paediatric plastic surgery service.
Mr Armstrong graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2009 with an intercalated BMedSci (Hons) and BMBS degrees. In 2014, Mr Armstrong was awarded an MSc in Burn Care from the University of London. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS (Plast) in 2019 ) and a Fellow of the European Board of Hand Surgery in 2021.
Mr Armstrong undertook specialist plastic surgery training on the Oxford Rotation. Additionally, he has trained in the plastic surgery units of Exeter, Liverpool, Chester, Portsmouth, Stoke Mandeville and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He has also trained internationally in Australia, the USA and has been on a plastic surgery charitable mission to Cambodia.
Mr Armstrong undertook a subspecialty fellowship at GOSH, focusing on Children’s limb differences, hypospadias, and vascular anomalies. He has a particular interest in hypospadias surgery and undertook a travelling fellowship, visiting 7 units in England. This was sponsored by Ethicon, the Royal College of Surgeons, NHS Blood and Tissue and BAPRAS.
An additional interest of Mr Armstrong’s is patient safety and driving quality improvement in healthcare. In 2016, he spent the year as a fellow to Professor Sir Mike Richards, the Chief Inspector of Hospitals and worked under Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, then NHS England National Medical Director. Whilst working in these roles, Alexander inspected various healthcare environments and advised inspection methodology for surgery and cosmetics to the CQC, where he remains a Specialist Advisor.
In 2021, Mr Armstrong was certified by the Royal College of Surgeons in all areas of Cosmetic Surgery. He is a founding member of the Cosmetic Practice Standards Authority (CPSA) which looks to promote patient safety and quality in the sector.
Mr Armstrong also is part of a multidisciplinary team at the Nuffield who provide female to male ‘top’ surgery.
