Mr Alexander ArmstrongConsultant Plastic Surgeon

Mr Alexander Armstrong was appointed as a Consultant at University Hospital Plymouth (UHP) NHS Trust in 2021. He offers both an adult and paediatric plastic surgery service.

Mr Armstrong graduated from The University of Nottingham in 2009 and was awarded a Masters degree from the University of London in 2014, focusing on burn injuries. In 2019, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and in 2021 became a Fellow of the European Board of Hand Surgery, offering upper limb surgery for both children and adults.

Mr Armstrong undertook Plastic Surgery themed Core Surgical Training in Exeter and higher Plastic Surgery training in Liverpool and on the Oxford Rotation. He has also trained in Sydney, Australia, Harvard, USA and been on plastic surgery charitable mission to Cambodia.

Mr Armstrong undertook a Fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital, focusing on children's limb differences, hypospadias, vascular anomalies and skin lesions (including giant melanocytic naevi). He undertook a travelling Hypospadias Fellowship visiting 7 English units, sponsored by the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).

Mr Armstrong also works closely with the orthopaedic team at Derriford providing a limb reconstruction service for the Major Trauma Centre. 

As part of the skin cancer multidisciplinary team at UHP, Mr Armstrong provides excision of skin tumours, performs sentinel lymph node biopsy for melanoma and offers complex reconstruction.

Mr Armstrong has an additional interest in regulation and spent a year at the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as Fellow to Professor Sir Mike Richards, the Chief Inspector of Hospitals. This gave him unique insight into regulation and the safety requirements in clinical settings. He remains a Specialist Advisor to the CQC.
