Richard graduated from The University of Manchester, with a period of study at Keele University in 2008. After gaining a wide range of experience in various specialities and completing a Teaching Fellowship at Lincoln Hospital, he moved to the Southwest in 2014 for postgraduate training in Emergency Medicine.

He has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine since 2019 and became a consultant in Emergency Medicine at Derriford Hospital after completing his postgraduate training in 2020.

During his consultancy, he was the Emergency Department's Clinical Governance lead and now is the Service Line Director for the Emergency Department.
