Mr Spyridon E Chalkiadakis

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Mr Chalkiadakis is a comprehensive Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in ocular inflammation. He received his initial ophthalmic training at the Athens Eye Hospital, Greece, which belongs to the Greek NHS. Starting his postgraduate studies in basic research and ocular pharmacology and immunology at the Medical School of the University of Athens, he then transferred to the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology in London for the rest of his postgraduate studies after receiving a prestigious Research Grant from the European Research Council. At UCL, he extended his experimental models in ocular inflammation and pharmacology. His pioneering research resulted in the award of two patents, one from the US Patent and Trademark Office and a second one from the European Patent Office. These patents recognised his contribution as the main and first inventor.

Mr Chalkiadakis moved back to clinical practice with a Fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis from the Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in London. He spent ten years practising his speciality in the UK before being appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Plymouth. In September 2024, he was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Eye Infirmary (REI), University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, and is currently the Clinical Lead of the REI Urgent Care Services, managing and overseeing the smooth service for the local population of the Plymouth and Devon area.

Mr Chalkiadakis is also actively involved in teaching at the University of Plymouth Peninsula Medical School and translational research at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. At the Trust he participates as a Co-Investigator and Principal Investigator to numerous clinical trials run by the Research and Development department, particularly those involving the REI. In addition, he is an active member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of London, a Specialist Ophthalmologist of the General Medical Council in England, a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology, and a Specialist Ophthalmologist in Italy and Greece. He gives regular presentations regarding his job and has authored in peer-reviewed journals, numerous manuscripts, and surgical techniques.
