Consultant Microbiologist

General information:
Richard Cunningham is a consultant microbiologist. He  graduated from Trinity College Dublin and trained in microbiology in Liverpool and Nottingham.  He was appointed to Derriford Hospital in 1996.

Qualifications: BA MB BCh BAO FRCPath

General areas of expertise:

• General Microbiology
• Bacteriology
• Virology.

Particular areas of expertise:

• Special interest in application of rapid molecular tests to hospital-acquired infections.
• Infection in Critical Care, Renal and Neonatal Units.
• Transplant infections
• Research interest in the association between overuse of proton pump inhibitors and increased risk of infection.
• Epidemiology of bacterial resistance.
