General information:
Dr Dimpel graduated at Kiel University (Germany) in 1989, where he completed his PhD on “Human Papilloma Virus and cervical cancer”.
He started training in Anaesthesia in the UK in 1991, taking up his first substantive consultant appointment in Cardiff, before eventually moved to Plymouth in 2003 as a Consultant Neuro Anaesthetist.
Whilst keeping in touch with most anaesthetic subspecialties, neuroanaesthesia accounts for the majority of Dr Dimpel’s clinical commitments.
From this neuroanesthesia background, he has developed a particular interest in EEG and Depth of Anaesthesia monitoring. Dr Dimpel was the Plymouth coordinator for the National Audit Project (NAP5) on accidental awareness during (supposed) anaesthesia; gives lectures and workshops on raw EEG monitoring nationally and internationally, and has published a previously unknown EEG pattern during isoflurane anaesthesia.
Other clinical interests include difficult airway management, and anaphylaxis (coordinator for NAP6 [anaphylaxis]), as well as anaesthesia in low-resource countries.
