Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic

Head and shoulder shot of Mr El Ashmawy Mr El Ashmawy is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the management of trauma and problems related to the hip, knee and pelvis. Mr El Ashmawy started as a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust in July 2022 and then he had his substantive post and was appointed as a permanent Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant in January 2023.

Mr El Ashmawy was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2018, then subsequently commenced his first senior Arthroplasty fellowship at University Hospitals Plymouth in which he had more subspecialty training in Hip and knee Arthroplasty surgery alongside trauma surgery. He then started a knee and hip fellowship at the internationally renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford for which he gained further expertise in partial and total knee replacement, revision hip and knee surgery, management of bone and joint infections,  knee arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction. He had his last senior fellowship at King’s College London University hospitals for which he had more experience in Lower limb arthroplasty and pelvis and acetabular trauma surgery.

Mr El Ashmawy's additional roles include: audit lead for the Trauma and Orthopaedic department, academic tutor for Peninsula Medical School, reviewer for The Journal of Arthroplasty and Lecturer of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Alexandria.

  • MCh Trauma and Orthopaedics: Masters in Trauma and Orthopaedics 2013.
  • MRCS UK 2014.
  • FRCS UK (Trauma and Orth) 2018.
  • PhD Ortho 2019.

Particular areas of expertise

  • Hip Arthroplasty: Total, complex primary, revision Hip replacement and acetabular reconstruction.
  • Knee Arthroplasty: Partial, total and Revision knee replacement.
  • Trauma (including peri-prosthetic hip and knee fractures, pelvis, and acetabular trauma).
  • Knee arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction.
