Mr O Elzain
Consultant Thoracic Surgeon
Qualifications: MBBS, MRCS, FRCS CTH, MD
Elzain graduated from the University of Khartoum, Sudan in 1998. He enjoyed several years of training in general surgery to be become a competent consultant in General Surgery. His strong interest in thoracic surgery led him to develop further skills by working for two years in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Sudan Heart Centre in Khartoum, Sudan.
He completed higher sub-specialty training at John Radcliffe Hospital (Oxford), subsequently working there as a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and also at the Freeman Hospital (Newcastle). In 2016, Elzain was appointed as a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.
Elzain has performed over 300 VATS lobectomies, 13 VATS thymectomies, over 1500 cases in general thoracic cases and over 1200 cases of open general thoracic cases of various complexities.
He has a particular interest in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, using video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for lung cancer resections, thymectomy and various general thoracic procedures. Post-operative pain control and enhanced recovery are his areas of interest.
He is a strong believer in patient’s advocacy, aiming to improve the medico-legal process of patients’ informed consents and decision-making process, as he sees a gap in transforming the medical experience to patients and general public.
In his free time, he enjoys hiking, cycling, rowing, history, current affairs and languages
