Dr P D Hughes
Consultant in general and thoracic medicine
General information:
I began my respiratory training in Plymouth before moving to the Royal Brompton Hospital in London to do a research degree in respiratory muscle strength and function. I then spent a year at St George's Hospital in London before spending a further year at the Brompton working with several international experts on lung disease. I joined Derriford Hospital in 1999 to help set up services for patients with sleep disordered breathing and ventilatory failure. Over the last 13 years we have successfully acquired funding, equipment and staff for both services which are now thriving. I also initiated the fast-track lung cancer pathway. I am now working to establish Derriford as a specialist pulmonary hypertension unit for Devon and Cornwall, in conjunction with Papworth and Royal Free Hospitals, two leading UK units for this condition.
Away from the clinic and wards, I am an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and sit on the SW respiratory experts group. I have previously chaired the South West respiratory training committee and been the SW regional respiratory adviser to the Royal College of Physicians.
