International Medical Graduates guide

Before Arriving in the UK:

• Find out about the current UK government guidelines for entering the UK

• Sign up and attend the GMC Welcome to UK Practice Workshop before you start your job. This can be done online and is free. Sign up to the Welcome to UK Practice Workshop

• Start your accommodation search

• If you have children, you may need to consider schooling. Find a school

• Consider applying for medical indemnity with organisations such as Medical Defence Union, Medical Protection Society, MDDUS. Trust indemnity is provided by the NHS resolutions, but it is wise to have your own indemnity.

• Understand the guidance around driving in the UK. Find out about driving in GB on a non-GB licence

• Consider joining the British Medical Association (BMA). The BMA is the trade union and professional body for doctors in the UK. At the time of publishing the BMA are offering 12 month free membership for doctors in their first year of living in the UK.

• Access our eLearning programmes on the E-Learning for Healthcare (elfh)

• Make sure you bring the original ID documents you submitted as part of your recruitment checks as we will need to check them when we meet with you face to face.

• Create a UKVI account to access and check your eVisa

 

Once you arrive in the UK: 

• Open a UK bank account: HSBC has a relationship with the Trust for setting up bank accounts for international employees

• Register with a local GP. It is very important to register with a GP as soon as possible in order to access primary medical care in the UK.

• Register with a local Dentist

• Apply for a National Insurance (NI) number

EVA - Employee Virtual Assistant

EVA is a digital system which makes it faster and easier to access people services support for colleagues across Devon.

EVA provides a single, user-friendly platform where you can ask questions and find answers about People Services (HR) and Payroll. You can track the progress of your queries in real-time. This means fewer delays, reduced paperwork, and a simpler way of accessing help.

If you can’t find the answer to your question in EVA, then you can raise a ticket via EVA for the One Devon People Services Helpdesk who will support your request.

You will be able to access the EVA portal once you are logged onto the Trust Network and can use it 24/7 on any device.
