Mr A Kumar
Consultant Neurosurgeon and Lateral Skull Base Surgeon
Mr Aditaya Kumar is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Derriford Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, with a specialist interest in lateral skull base surgery. He completed his medical degree via the University of Cambridge and London. He worked in Yorkshire and then completed his neurosurgical training in Glasgow in 2022. After this he completed a two year Royal College of Surgeons of England–accredited Fellowship in anterior and lateral skull base surgery, also in Glasgow.
He leads the lateral skull base service for Devon and Cornwall and serves as the neurosurgical lead for the regional Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) service. His clinical work focuses on the management of complex skull base tumours, vestibular schwannomas, hearing preservation, meningiomas and the multidisciplinary care for patients with NF2. He also looks after patients with degenerative spinal disease.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Kumar is deeply involved in education and mentorship. He acts as academic and clinical supervisor to neurosurgical trainees and resident doctors, helping them develop both their technical and non-technical skills. Beyond the hospital, he writes widely on surgical education and professional development, sharing reflections on leadership, communication, and resilience in surgery with an audience of more than 20,000 across social media. As a result, he has been invited to give talks at national orthopaedic, cardiology and neurosurgical conferences in the UK and India. He sees language as another instrument of healing, capable of touching what surgery cannot.
