Mr B Nguyen
Consultant Cardiac Surgeon
Mr Nguyen is a Consultant Cardiac Surgery and provides expert surgical care for patients in the Southwest of England in the United Kingdom.
After graduating from Imperial College in London, he undertook Professorial unit House-office jobs in Central and South-west London. He completed a formal Anatomy Demonstratorship in Dundee, Scotland, with Dr David Dawson and Professor Dame Sue Black. He then returned to London and completed basic surgical training on the Hammersmith Hospitals training rotation and completing a Masters Degree in Surgical Science at Imperial College London.
His formal higher specialist Cardiothoracic surgical training was in Oxford with Professor David Taggart at the John Radcliffe Hospital before being appointed to the Southwest Deanery Training programme from the National Cardiothoracic Training Programme.
In the interim, he was then competitively appointed to Clinical Research Fellow position at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London and completed a PhD under the supervision of Professor Paul Evans; Professor Dorian Haskard and Mr Jon Anderson in collaboration with Professor Gianni Angelini. This work was funded by competitive awards from the British Heart Foundation and Heart-Research UK in investigating the molecular mechanisms of inflammation and cardiopulmonary bypass. He won the SCTS Edwards medal for his translational research output.
He then completed his higher Cardiothoracic Surgical training in the Bristol Heart Institute and then the Derriford Cardiothoracic surgical unit, two of the most active high-volume centres in the United Kingdom. He spent a year abroad in Toronto on an advanced Cardiac surgery fellowship with Professor Stephen Fremes at Sunnybrook Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada. This was supported by both the HCA Travelling Fellowship award and the SCTS Ethicon Travel Award.
Mr Nguyen then returned to the United Kingdom in 2018 and appointed a substantive surgical consultant in Derriford and has worked in Plymouth ever since, serving the patients of Devon and Cornwall. He holds clinics in Derriford, Torbay and Truro.
