Consultant Neurosurgeon

James Palmer graduated from The London Hospital and completed neurosurgical training in Southampton and Glasgow. In 1996 he was appointed to a consultant neurosurgeon post at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London where he was responsible for developing acute head injury care, ran a specialised facial pain service, and developed surgery for spasmodic torticollis.

In 1999 he moved to Plymouth and his practice has become increasingly specialised to the management of complex CNS tumours including awake surgery, acoustic nerve tumours, and skull base neurosurgery.

Alongside clinical practice he is the Medical Director Specialised Services for NHS England playing a lead role in the development of complex services and cutting edge treatments at a national level.
