Mr M Shahzad
Consultant Neurosurgeon with Special Interest in Neuromodulation
Mr Shahzad is a Locum Consultant Neurosurgeon at Derriford Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, with a special interest in neuromodulation and functional neurosurgery.
His clinical practice includes the treatment of degenerative cervical and lumbar spine conditions, as well as a range of cranial neurosurgical conditions including meningiomas, hydrocephalus requiring ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts, and head injuries.
Within neuromodulation, Mr Shahzad has a particular interest in intrathecal baclofen therapy and baclofen pump surgery, spinal cord stimulation (SCS), and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). These treatments use implanted devices to help manage selected neurological conditions, including severe spasticity, chronic pain and epilepsy.
Alongside his clinical work, he has interests in surgical innovation, digital healthcare, artificial intelligence and improving neurosurgical care. He has participated in national healthcare innovation programmes (NHS Clinical entrepreneur programme, Kings Innovation Accelerator Fellowship) and is involved in the development of new surgical technologies. He also contributes to medical education, clinical research, quality improvement and the development of digital clinical systems within the Trust (Medical Information Officer OneDevon EPR). He is a member of the National Neuromodulation Society of The United Kingdom and Ireland (NSUKI).
