General information:
Surgeon Captain Jason Smith graduated from Newcastle University and joined the Royal Navy in 1992.  He was appointed as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Derriford Hospital in 2005. He is an Honorary Professor at Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, and is also currently the Defence Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Birmingham.

Particular areas of expertise:

• Research in emergency medicine and trauma. His current research interests include pain in emergency patients and the management of blast injuries.
• The management of major trauma
