Dr R Struthers Consultant Anaesthetist

General information:
Dr Struthers has been a Consultant Anaesthetist in Plymouth since 2002 and is an Honorary Lecturer for Plymouth University School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr Struthers the Clinical Lead for the Department of Anaesthesia.

Dr Struthers has special interests in Planned Care Assessment and Anaesthesia for Neurosurgery. He has contributed to national guidance and policy on assessment before surgery.

Dr Struthers trained in the South West of England and the Midlands. He spent a year as a Consultant at the University of Michigan, USA doing both anaesthesia and research before returning to the UK.

He was the Caldicott Guardian for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust from 2005-2012 overseeing the use of Patient Data and Information Governance.

• Exercise testing to assess risk before surgery

Anaesthesia for Orthopaedic Surgery

Particular areas of expertise:
Dr Struthers has a research interest into predicting risk before surgery and changing care to improve outcomes. Previous research projects have looked at assessing fitness before surgery (including walking tests and exercise bicycle), changing the way we give intravenous fluids during surgery, and looking at blood flow during and after surgery and how it impacts on healing.
