Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon
Mr Woodacre specialises in all aspects of orthopaedic spinal surgery from skull base to pelvis.
He has a subspecialist interest in
- Antero-lateral based surgery
- Minimally invasive surgery, including vertebral augmentation (vertebroplasty/ kyphoplasty)
- Spinal reconstruction (trauma/ tumour/ infection/ degeneration)
He manages associated pelvic conditions including coccygeal and sacroiliac joint disorders.
He works in conjunction with colleagues at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital to treat paediatric and adult spinal deformity.
He is the clinical lead for spinal day case surgery at Derriford Hospital.
He is the current junior doctor lead for the neurosurgical department.
He has a Masters Degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine which he utilises to advise in the prehabilitation and rehabilitation of patients with spinal disorders.
He is part of the 1/5 emergency spinal oncall service.
Mr Woodacre was appointed as a consultant complex spinal surgeon in Derriford Hospital in 2019.
Training
Mr Woodacre worked in general surgery, vascular surgery, urology and trauma and orthopaedics in Wessex and the South West of England Deaneries. He completed his specialist surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery, including spinal surgery, in the South West in 2016. He subsequently undertook 3 subspecialist fellowships in spinal surgery:
Ipswich Hospital, East Anglia: focussing on degenerative disease, tumour, infections, minimally invasive and anterolateral surgery + adult deformity
Royal Perth State Spinal Unit + Perth Children’s Hospital, Western Australia: focussing on the management of major spinal trauma, spinal cord injuries, paediatric spinal trauma and paediatric deformity.
Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital: focussing on degenerative disease, anterolateral surgery, paediatric and adult deformity.
Research
Mr Woodacre has published extensively in the fields of Trauma and Orthopaedics, Spinal Surgery, and Sports and Exercise Medicine. He is an award winning presenter, including best prize at the 2019 British Association of Spinal Surgeons conference.
