All About Our Services
We are the only dedicated children’s theatre unit in the South West and we look after 5000 children a year. We have specialist nursing and medical staff with great experience of, and specialist training in working with children of all ages and all types of challenges. We work closely with other teams involved in the care of children throughout Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and throughout the South West.
We care for children of all ages from premature babies to the age of 18yrs.
We provide a wide range of types of surgery and other procedures for children:
- Orthopaedics
- Ear, Nose & Throat surgery
- General surgery
- Dental
- Eyes
- Plastic Surgery
- Maxillo-facial
- Endoscopy
- Imaging – MRI and CT scans
- Oncology (cancer treatment)
We run a children’s pre-operative assessment service to help prepare children for surgery. Children also have the opportunity to meet with our Play Specialists before surgery to help prepare them and reduce any anxiety. Child friendly information leaflets are provided to support children and their families.
We provide a Paediatric Pain Service staffed by senior doctors and nurses.
We are fortunate to have iPads (provided by the charity Plymouth Kidzz) as entertainment and distraction for children undergoing surgery.
