Maternity Transformation: Creating a Calming Environment for Patients

Your generous donations have helped us enhance maternity spaces at University Hospitals Plymouth, transforming women’s experiences of childbirth.
The delivery rooms have been thoughtfully upgraded with relaxing galaxy lighting, radios, beautiful scenic murals, and new equipment to ensure the best care for patients as they welcome their new babies into the world.
Emma Aurigi, Midwife at UHP, shared with us, “We have been so lucky to receive charitable funds from Plymouth Hospitals Charity. The addition of these decorations and equipment has allowed our rooms to become less ‘clinical’ and more colourful and welcoming for patients and families.”
We help fund initiatives that enhance patient care in ways that go beyond what NHS funding allows. This transformation gives expectant mothers the opportunity to create a space that feels comforting and personal during this special yet challenging time.
The galaxy lighting sets a peaceful ambiance, and calming music can be played to help ease the experience.
The murals offer a homely welcome as soon as you enter, and act as a stunning focal point.
Emma explained, “the environment plays a huge role in how a person experiences childbirth. When a birthing person feels safe, supported, and relaxed, it can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and discomfort. Being in a space that feels calm and private, and having control of the birth process allows people to feel empowered.”
Comfortable upright birth (CUB) supports were also funded to aid during labour, helping patients to maintain safer and mobile birthing positions more easily.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated to make this possible. With your ongoing support, we can continue to create supportive and healing spaces for patients and their families in our hospitals.
