Celebrating Christmas in Derriford ICU's Secret Garden

Carol singers singing at the secret garden

This December, Derriford Hospital's ICU Secret Garden came alive with festive cheer as it hosted a special Christmas celebration to mark the second anniversary of the garden's official opening.
The event brought together hospital staff, patients, and their families in a heartwarming gathering that highlighted the sense of community at Derriford Hospital. Adding to the magic of the evening, Soul Singers, a community choir from Plymouth, performed an enchanting selection of carols with their voices resonating through the garden, creating a truly memorable atmosphere.
Since its opening two years ago, the ICU Secret Garden has provided a unique tranquil space for patients, families, and staff to find solace amid the pressures of hospital life.
Kate Tantam, Specialist Research and Education Sister at ICU shared her thoughts on the occasion:
"The Secret Garden has been a lifeline for so many during difficult times. Celebrating its anniversary during the festive season is a wonderful reminder of its significance and the generosity of everyone who made it possible."
Plymouth Hospitals Charity played a major role in the garden’s creation, supported by the generosity of donors, local businesses, and volunteers. This Christmas celebration reflected that same spirit of collaboration, with staff and supporters coming together to make the event special.
Attendees enjoyed festive refreshments and the opportunity to reflect on the impact of the Secret Garden, which continues to bring moments of peace to all who visit.
As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded of the importance of spaces like the Secret Garden in fostering recovery, resilience, and togetherness. Plymouth Hospitals Charity remains committed to supporting projects that enhance the experience of patients, staff, and the wider community at Derriford Hospital.
