Wellbeing support to reach all staff at UHP from donations made during the first wave of COVID-19

Thanks to a generous grant from NHS Charities Together, University Hospitals Plymouth’s (UHP) Wellbeing for All initiative is being rolled out across the Trust. Donations from across the country made to the national Emergency COVID Appeal in 2020 have made possible the distribution of money to all the NHS Charities in the UK. Plymouth Hospitals Charity was successful in its application for £198k to fund this programme.

This opportunity will provide additional psychological support for colleagues, with the objective to create a strong and stable workforce. The programme has been designed by a multi-disciplinary team including the Director of People, Occupational Health, Psychologists and Learning and Organisational Development colleagues and puts in place a programme of mental health support, compassionate leadership, well-being and positive mental health conversations and services for our colleagues.

Corinne Bailey, Plymouth Hospitals Charity Manager said, “In recognition of the incredible dedication of the staff at UHP it has been a privilege to work on this bid, to put some key measures and services in place to help support colleagues when things get really tough. We’re not out of the woods yet and as COVID-19 numbers climb again, this grant will fund training in mental health first aid. The staff across UHP are resilient and brilliant and with this grant it’s great to be able to offer everyone the opportunity to access psychological services and people champions, who can provide dedicated, and practical psychological support.”

The last few years have presented some of the toughest times the NHS has ever faced. Whilst colleagues have shown incredible strength, resilience and teamwork, it is crucial to consider the long-term impact of such a prolonged period of stress and uncertainty. This programme has been designed to offer people the right support when they need it, creating conditions for our colleagues to be able to provide patients with the best possible care.

The Wellbeing for All Project team is made up of Julia Bird – Wellbeing for All Psychologist, Sharon Bailey - Wellbeing for All Facilitator, and Emma Sullivan – Wellbeing for All Administrator.

One of the components of the funding will support Wellbeing for All training for line managers, which has been incredibly well received. Wellbeing for All Facilitator, Sharon Bailey added, “I am delighted to see our manager’s enthusiasm during the training. They are displaying their desire to continue to explore how they can enhance wellbeing support for their teams. An opportunity for peer wellbeing discussions has been well received by the 91 managers trained so far. Other positive feedback included them receiving tools to ensure they look after themselves and colleagues as well as skills to think outside of the box of ways to support colleagues. Part of the project is also to appoint and train colleagues into our People Champion roles.  This is an opportunity for our colleagues to be able to really make a difference- supporting others with advice and efficiently signposting to areas such as wellbeing, inclusion and the Freedom to Speak Up Guardians. Recruitment within the Trust continues building on the successful appointment of 43 People Champions to date.
