When you start at University Hospitals Plymouth you will attend an induction event and training. You will also need to get an ID badge and find out if you need a uniform.
After the Induction event, there are further eLearning requirements. You will have protected time for this on your first day, although you may not complete it in full. You will be sent an email with your login details for the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) where you can complete your mandatory training; we would recommend checking your junk/spam folder.
You will need an ID badge to access different areas of the hospital. Staff should wear their ID badge at all times whilst working.
To get an ID badge you can attend a drop-in session on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11am to 12pm in the ID card office on Level 5. To get to this office:
Enter the glass door between Warren's Bakery and the Parking Desk on level 6 (main entrance) of Derriford Hospital
Take the stairs down to the office, which will be signposted.
Day 2 varies by role, your line manager will confirm your shifts/next steps and carry out a Local Induction with you once you are in your department.
You will be required to undertake practical sessions for resuscitation and manual handling which will be booked for you by the Department of Professional Healthcare Education. You will receive an email from this team with the date (which will be within four weeks of your start date), venue and time, and your manager will also receive a copy of this information.
Please note: prior to the practical session, it is important that you undertake the theory and videos for these two subjects, which can be found on your eLearning account.
Staff members who are required to wear a uniform will have this provided along with any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Clothing should be clean and ironed and the individual’s overall appearance should be of a smart, professional person.
The Trust’s ‘bare below the elbows’ requirements apply to all workers working in or visiting a clinical environment and includes nurses, medical and dental staff, ward clerks, receptionists, and volunteers. The only exception is where PPE rules apply.
The Trust requires staff to wear short sleeves/rolled up sleeves, and no wrist watches or jewellery (except for one wedding type band) below the elbows. Fob watches may be worn instead of wrist watches without affecting patient safety.
The rationale behind bare below the elbows is to facilitate effective hand washing to reduce the risk of cross infection through harbouring harmful organisms. All staff should maintain a high level of personal hygiene and appearance.
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is committed to protecting and improving the health and wellbeing of staff by providing smoke free environments, and to ensuring that the image presented by the Trust and its staff with regard to a healthy, smoke free environment, is a positive one.
