Chief Executive Role

Mark Hackett at an event

We have extended the term of office of Mark Hackett as our Interim Chief Executive. Mark, who joined in April, has agreed to stay on for up to 18 months, longer than the original planned six months.

Mark is focusing with clinical and managerial colleagues in particular to lead changes which are driving improvement in our services for patients needing Urgent and Emergency Care. The percentage of patients being seen and treated within 4 hours has risen for three consecutive months, increasing from 54.1% in March 2024 to 64% by the end of June. He has impressed both colleagues and the Board.

Mark has worked with others to create a plan to secure and embed the improvements which are starting to be made and we want to allow him the time and opportunity to do that. At the same time, Mark is working with the Board and other colleagues within and outside the Trust to continue increasing our capacity to meet the current and future needs of the communities we serve and to reduce our financial deficit on a sustainable basis.

Our goal is to achieve sustainable change which delivers better care for our patients and Mark is currently doing a great job of leading University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP) in that direction. We have therefore extended Mark’s term and paused our recruitment process for a substantive Chief Executive, which we will return to and advertise again next year.
