Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) announcement

Our Trust estates team has been working with specialist structural engineers to ensure we have the best possible advice and guidance to keep people safe. RAAC is present in the oldest part of the Derriford Hospital building, between floors 4-7 and has been there since it was first built in the early 1980s. RAAC is not integral to the main structure of Derriford Hospital, which is concrete. It is present in internal wall panels but they are not load-bearing. We do not have any horizontal RAAC panels in our building.

We have a clear protocol for managing RAAC which includes regular inspections and our last inspection was earlier this year (2023). This did not identify any issues and no remedial works are required. The panels are in good condition and well maintained. We undertake regular structural inspections and maintenance and there is no known risk to staff and patients.
