Simulation

Image from Sim Suite The Simulaton Suite opened in May 2008, within Derriford Hospital and is hugely important in the education of many staff groups.  The suite has state of the art mannikins and can be set up to accurately replicate an everyday theatre or ward.  Staff are able then to go through scenarios which are encountered very rarely in normal practice, allowing them to recognise  important situations and how to respond.

There is increasing amounts of workplace multi-professional training to train clinical teams in human factors and patient safety. We have been doing this in theatres regularly for 2 years now during CME sessions to improve safety and teamwork. There is also paediatrics and Emargency Department based simulation.

New for 2015 is a HESW funded fellowship to promote human factors , simulation and patient safety. This is going to be a project looking to improve the management of deteriorating patients on MAU. We are still organising the training but is backed by the Board. If successful we hope it will provide some resources to continue the training in other wards in the Trust.
