Rest and Activity

When you go home you are advised to rest quietly. Do not fulfil any social engagements on that day or for 24 hours. You should not be left alone without another adult in attendance to assist you in case of emergencies. It is probable you will not feel like doing more than minimal activities for a few days. If you are still sore, tired, or lethargic you should continue to rest until you feel better. if you do not improve, you should see or contact your GP.

Pain

It is normal to experience some wound discomfort for 24-48 hours after your operation. You will find that a painkiller taken at regular intervals will help you during this time. If the pain persists or gets worse, you should contact your G.P.

Wound

Most wounds heal rapidly by themselves. You may need to wear a pad to absorb any discharge. If bleeding occurs, press with a clean cloth on top of the wound for 5-10 minutes.

A small pack is sometimes inserted into the back passage. This will either dissolve or pass spontaneously when you open your bowels.

Hygiene

You may bath/shower when you feel able to do so, take frequent baths, twice daily if possible. Avoid perfumed toiletries and dry the site thoroughly. For 24 hours avoid a very hot bath, do not lock the bathroom door, and ensure that your carer is aware that you are in the bath.

Constipation

It is important not to get constipated. A high fibre diet plus plenty of water should help or take a mild laxative.

Follow-up

If needed, the appointment will be sent to you through the post.
