Please be mindful this may not be the exact times due to care we may be providing patients on the ward. Our doctors have a multidisciplinary team meeting between 9am to 10am. They then start their ward rounds and are available until 4pm. After this time and at night, there is a doctor on call to assist with urgent needs and reviews.

Visiting

We currently are allowing x2 visitors per patient from the times 10am to 7pm. We ask that all visitors please use the hand gel providing when entering and leaving the ward. Face masks are available if you wish to wear them. Please can we ask that visitors do not sit on the patients’ bed and use the chairs available.

We allow children over the age of 9 to visit but in exceptional circumstances this may be adjusted. Please discuss with the Nurse in Charge of the ward or the Ward Manager.

Waiting times

Patients will be waiting for different procedures. Please do not be alarmed if someone is taken for their procedure before you as their clinical need may be different to yours. We also have times where emergencies will take priority. If you have any questions about your procedure or times, please ask staff.

Leaving the ward

As much as we would like to accommodate everyone's needs, we would highly recommend that you remain on Bickleigh ward whilst you are an inpatient. This is to ensure you are clinically safe. If you decide against this advice, nursing staff will alert the medical team and you will be asked to sign a document prior to leaving the ward.

Ward Moves

We often must move patients to a different bedspace on the ward, due to procedures or infection control reasons. Please do not be alarmed if we move you to a different bedspace during your stay.

On occasions you may be asked to move to our sister ward Braunton. Different consultants have different specialities, and we need to ensure we find the appropriate consultant for your individualised care.

We understand that our monitoring equipment can be quite disturbing, especially at night, however, please understand that it is essential to our patients care and safety. We do try to minimise the noise and we will be very happy to explain the monitoring to you as we understand it can cause anxiety for patients and visitors. Please do not remove the monitoring unless this has been discussed with the medical and nursing team, this includes for washing and showering.

Property

At the start of your stay, someone from the nursing team will complete a property list and this will be stored in your notes. However, please note unless otherwise stated, the hospital cannot accept any responsibility for patients property and property is to be kept safe by the patient. There are showering facilities and hygiene products available for your use, if you need any of these please ask the nursing staff.

Day of discharge

Great news, the doctors have said you can go home! However, you may be referred to physiotherapy or occupational therapy depending on your individual needs. There is a discharge process in which the doctors will identify who can go home. We will discuss with you about your home life and how you will manage. We may suggest speaking to a physiotherapist or occupational therapist for some mobility support or help at home. The doctors will write your discharge letter which will be sent to pharmacy, and they will dispense your medications, please note this can take up to several hours. It is important that you go home with the right medication. Whilst waiting for your medications you will be transferred to the discharge lounge on level 3 to wait until your medications are ready.

Before you leave Bickleigh Ward, we would love for you to take a few minutes to complete our Friends and Family Questionnaire to provide us with feedback during your stay with us. These can be found at the reception desk or please ask a member of staff.
