What is C. auris?

Candidozyma auris (C. auris) is a type of fungus (yeast).

  • It can live on the skin or in the body

  • Many people may carry it without symptoms

  • Sometimes it can cause infection

What does a positive result mean?

If you test positive for C. auris:

  • You may be carrying the fungus without symptoms

  • You may not need treatment unless you have an infection

  • If you do have an infection, you may be treated with antifungal

What happens if you are admitted to hospital?

If you come into hospital:

  • You may be cared for in a single room

  • Staff may wear gloves and aprons

  • Your environment and equipment will be cleaned regularly

This helps reduce the spread of infection.

You may also have further screening tests if needed.

Important: A positive result will not affect your care or treatment.

How is C.auris spread?

C. auris can spread in hospitals:

  • Through contact with other people

  • Via hands, or equipment

  • From contaminated environments

What can you do?

You can help reduce the spread by:

Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water:

  • After using the toilet

  • Before eating and drinking

  • Using alcohol hand gel if available

Avoid touching:

  • Wounds

  • Medical devices (such as drips or catheters)

What about when you go home?

At home:

  • You do not need to do anything special

  • Wash your hands regularly

  • No special cleaning or laundry is required

  • Take any information cards given to you to healthcare appointments.

Can you have visitors?

  • Visitors are usually allowed but must follow staff advice

  • Visitors may be asked to wash their hands and wear protective clothing

What does this mean for you and your family?

  • Many people carry C. auris without problems

  • A positive result does not mean you are unwell

  • Good hygiene helps protect you and others

When should you seek advice?

Speak to a healthcare professional if:

  • You feel unwell

  • You think you may have an infection

Take any information cards given to you to healthcare appointments.

A positive C.auris result will not hinder your care in any way.
