Rest and Activity
When you go home you are advised to rest quietly. Do not fulfil any social engagements on that day for 24 hours. You should not be left alone without another adult in attendance to assist you in case of emergencies. After 24 hours, if you feel well, you may resume your normal activities. If you are still sore, tired or lethargic you should continue to rest until you feel better. This could take a few days. If you do not improve, you should contact your G.P.
Pain
You may experience some discomfort when passing urine for the first few times after the procedure. This sensation will gradually disappear. If needed, a painkiller taken at regular intervals will help you. However, if after 2 – 3 days you develop cystitis, severe burning and/or stinging when passing urine, see you G.P.
Passing urine
Initially you may pass some blood in your urine. It should return to normal within a day or two. Until then, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. But if this bleeding persists or you are passing frequent clots, please seek medical advice. You may experience an irritating urge to want to pass urine more frequently, this is normal after a cystoscopy and the sensation should soon settle.
Hygiene
You may bath/shower when you feel able to do so. For 24 hours avoid a very hot bath, do not lock the bathroom door, do not use bubble bath and ensure that your carer is aware that you are in the bath.
Intercourse
As soon as any local discomfort has settled you may resume sexual intercourse.
Follow-up
If needed, the appointment will be sent to you through the post.
