Daily Care of the Freka Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastro-Jejunal tube (PEG-J)
Two Step Daily care
Step 1:
Undo the clip on the triangular fixation plate, detach the tube from the groove and move away from the skin.
Clean the stoma site, tube and fixation plate with mild soap and water using a soft cloth (no cotton wool products)
Step 2:
Advance the tube 3-4cm. DO NOT ROTATE. Pull back gently until resistance is felt.
Clean the tube that has been in the stomach to remove acid.
Dry the tube, fixation plate and skin thoroughly.
Replace the fixation plate approximately 1cm from the skin, re-insert the tube into the groove and close the clip. If not using for feeds, flush both gastro and jejunal ports daily with water as advised by the Dietitian.
Aim to complete step 2 at least once a week but no more than once a day.
Document how far the tube was advanced and whether there was any resistance.
The purpose of advancing the tube is to prevent Buried Bumper Syndrome.
Inform appropriate Health Care Professional if any concerns.
Points to remember
• Good hand & equipment hygiene
• Maintain sitting position of a minimum of 45° when flushing & feeding
• Regular mouth care
• Monitor the condition of stoma site and use prescribed topical creams/barrier film and/or prescribed dressings as clinically indicated
