You have been given this leaflet because the doctor or nurse in charge of your care today has advised that you need a manipulation (straightening) of your fracture.  This means you will need to return to the Emergency Department (ED) at the time and date stated below for further treatment.  When you return, please book in to the ED reception as normal and tell them you are returning for a manipulation of your fracture.  We shall aim to perform your manipulation in as timely fashion as possible but there may be a period of waiting involved if the Department is busy.

Please return to ED at:

  • You can take all of your usual morning medications prior to coming in for your manipulation unless otherwise specifically stated by the doctor or nurse looking after you.

  • You may, if required, take simple painkillers such as paracetamol in the morning before you return.

The doctor or nurse will explain to you what will happen for your fracture manipulation.  Most manipulations require sedation (medicines given through a drip to make you feel sleepy and unaware but not a complete general anaesthetic). Therefore, we ask all patients not to eat anything after 0200 on the day of your manipulation.  You may drink fluids up to 0400 but after that please only have small sips of water to take tablets.

For those patients whose manipulations require sedation, you will need to stay in the Department for a period of observation (usually a couple of hours). Please arrange for someone to be available to collect you as you will not be able to drive after sedation and ensure that there will be a responsible adult available to look after you for the subsequent 24 hours.
